Cast Iron Bread-Baking Pot

This cast iron Dutch oven bread baking pot is ideal for baking bread.  Cast iron retains heat and distributes it evenly to the bread, minimizing temperature fluctuations within the oven. Additionally, by using a lid, manual steaming of the bread is not necessary because the water evaporating from the bread is trapped and steams itself naturally. The crumb becomes beautifully moist, and uncontrolled cracking of the dough surface is prevented. Once the lid is removed, a crispy crust can develop.

In addition to baking bread this Combo Cooker bread baking pot, which consists of a skillet and a deep pot or casserole dish, can be used on all types of oventops. The low height height of the skillet also makes for an easy transfer of your dough directly from the proofing basket into the hot Dutch oven minimizing the risk of burning yourself on the sides of the hot pot.

Tip: Since cast iron is very heavy, be sure to use professional oven mits when handling your extremely hot cast iron pot.

Lodge cast iron cookware has been manufactured in South Pittsburg, Tennessee since 1896. As a fifth-generation family business, Lodge Cast Iron prioritizes quality standards, its employees, and sustainability. The Lodge Dutch oven can last for generations.

Note: Lodge cast iron cookware is pre-seasoned with oil from the factory and is ready to use immediately. Since their pots and pans are hung for this process, there may be a small amount brown oil residue on the handle. This is not rust and is completely harmless. The oil at this point simply has not been completely carbonized. The spot can be easily scraped off and can be retreated with a dab of oil, but it will also disappear on its own with use in the oven.

Care Instructions

The Combo Cooker Dutch oven is pre-seasoned with vegetable oil from the factory and is ready to use immediately. The seasoned coating protects the cast iron from rust and creates a natural non-stick surface.

  • If you fry or cook with oil regularly, the natural coating will renew itself automatically.
  • Do not store acidic foods in the pot for an extended period.
  • After use, rinse with hot water and a brush and dry immediately.
  • Use very little or no dish soap as this can dissolve the natural coating.
  • Do not put in the dishwasher or soak in water: risk of rust!

If necessary, the Dutch oven can be re-seasoned:

Step 1: Thoroughly scrub the cast iron pan or pot with hot water, dish soap, and a brush. Then dry completely.

Step 2: Apply a thin layer of vegetable oil to the entire pan or pot with a kitchen towel (also on the outside if the coating is no longer present)

Step 3: Bake in the oven at 250°C for about 1 hour with the opening facing down on a rack. You can place a baking sheet on the shelf below to catch any dripping oil.

Cotton Oven Mitts

These are the first oven mitts I've used that didn't burn my hands. These double-knit cotton oven mitts are made specifically for the bakery trade and are very heat-resistant. The oven mitts are certified up to a temperature of 250°C. With these oven mitts even heavy roasting pans or steel baking plates can be easily lifted from a hot oven. Although the oven mitts are a size 10, they are also suitable for smaller hands since they shrink slightly after the first wash and the soft material conforms well to the hand. I had the mitts tested on hands from size 6 to 12 and everyone was delighted with the fit. Since the cotton terry cloth fabric loses fine fibers, I recommend washing the oven mitts twice before use. As a forewarning, cotton fibers can burn when handling very hot oven dishes. In order to avoid this, it is better to use oven mitts or potholders made from leather.
